Reusable kitchen towels: choosing a pack and building a washing routine

A reusable cloth routine works when you have enough clean cloths on hand and a simple way to handle the used ones. Here's how to size a pack for your kitchen.

1. Count how many cloths you use between washes

Start with two numbers: how many cloths you reach for in a typical day, and how many days pass between laundry loads. Then add a few spares for the cloths still drying when you need a fresh one.

Example: 3 cloths a day × 3 days between washes = 9 cloths. A pack of 12 would leave 3 spare. This is only an illustration — your own count depends on how you cook and clean.

2. Allow for drying time

Cloths aren't ready the moment the washer stops. Leave room in your count for the time they spend drying so you're never left without a clean one.

3. Keep clean, damp and ready-to-wash cloths separate

Give each stage its own spot: a drawer or basket for clean cloths, a hook or rail where a damp cloth in use can air out, and a separate container for cloths waiting to be washed.

Let damp cloths dry before they go into the wash container rather than sealing them away wet, and always follow the care label on your cloths.
